Originally headquartered at Duke University’s Center for Tropical
Conservation (CTC), ParksWatch was created in 1999 by CTC Co- Directors, Dr. John Terborgh, James B. Duke Professor of Environmental Science, and Dr. Carel van Schaik, Professor of Biological Anthropology and Anatomy. As both have moved on and retired, ParksWatch is now run through the NGO WISE-Tropics, in the Cedar Key office, to maintain its nonprofit, tax exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. To date, ParksWatch has active projects with individuals and partner organizations in Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, and Argentina.
