Pui Pui Protection Forest includes highland forests as well as paramo in the upper reaches. It is an extremely humid area, with cloud forests covered in epiphytes and mosses.  The forest is essential to one of the most important hydrographic basins in the region.  Pui Pui Protection Forest\’s main objective is to conserve water and soil resources.

In the protected area\’s immediate surroundings, there is a strong colonization tendency, where deforestation and squatting are common.  Currently, there is only moderate timber extraction and a noted mining presence; both activities could directly threaten the area in the future if they are not regulated.
