Biabo Cordillera Azul Reserved Zone was designated Cordillera Azul National Park, which is the highest protection category of protected area, on May 21, 2001. The reserved zone expanded from 1,137,786 to 1,353,191 hectares in order to protect all the mountains in this area and to define natural boundaries. The boundaries on the east are the borders of forestry lots that are to be given under concession in public bidding for use and management. This new national park is the second largest in Peru, and it protects the montane forests of the departments of San Martín, Ucayali and Loreto.

The goals of Cordillera Azul National Park are to entirely protect the headwaters and the whole basin as well as the unique group of species, biological communities, and geological formations that belong to montane and pre-montane forests. This complex of mountains, located in the oriental counterfort end of the Andes, comprises a variety of habitats which include high-elevation swamps, acid rock flora and fauna communities, short spongy forests, eroded red stone mountains, slope and hill forests, isolated lakes and high-elevation streams. Cordillera Azul National Park will protect threatened ecosystems and fauna and flora populations. The National Park will also support the integral and balanced management of the natural resources of nearby areas.

ParksWatch had active and decisive participation in the creation of the new national park by leading the team who made the technical file, determined the boundaries of the park, and consulted with local communities. This achievement was also possible because of the support from the Ministry of Agriculture and INRENA. INRENA is now considering the possibility of handing over the administrative duties in total or only partially to the private sector. INRENA authorities helped in the delimitation process by allowing the relocation of a forestry lot, which was originally within the boundaries of the park, to within the limits of the reserved zone but outside the park. Nor Yauyos – Cochas Landscape Reserve

On June 3, 2001 the categorization of Alto Cañete and Cochas Pachacayo as a reserved zone was published in El Peruano, the official newspaper. The area of 221 ,68.48 hectares is called Nor-Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve. It is located in the sierra of Lima and the nearby area of Junín department. This is the first area established in Peru in the Landscape Reserve category. The Supreme Decree was signed on June 1, 2001. Its main goal is the conservation of the high basins of Cañete and Pachacayo rivers. These basins shelter unique ecosystems and landscape complexes, where the local communities coexist in harmony. They have developed social organization patterns for production, resulting not only in an efficient use of resources, but also in protection of their historical-cultural values.

The Nor- Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve contains, puya Raimondi forests, more than 80 medicinal species, 20 Andean food crops, (four species of Andean tubers with 160 varieties), 72 bird species, 17 mammals (including alpaca, vicuña, deer), snow capped peaks, such as the Pariacacca, canals and andenes systems, archaeological remains; musical folklore and artisan textiles.Pomac Forest Historical Sanctuary¨C13C¨C14C¨C15C¨C16C¨C17C¨C18C¨C19C’, ”, 0),
