Timber extraction occurs at an alarming rate in the region. Loggers are extracting timber as fast as possible before the formal forestry concessions go into place around the proposed Yavarí protected area.

There is also intense commercial hunting in the area. The middlemen and businessmen from Iquitos get rich off of the trade in game meat while they exploit the rural hunters who supply the market.  These rural hunters cannot cover their basic needs and are marginalized in extreme poverty.
