Headquartered at Duke University’s Center for Tropical Conservation (CTC), ParksWatch was created in 1999 by CTC Co-Directors, Dr. John Terborgh, James B. Duke Professor of Environmental Science, and Dr. Carel van Schaik, Professor of Biological Anthropology and Anatomy. The CTC is a University Center of Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences, and maintains nonprofit, tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

To date, ParksWatch has active projects with individuals and partner organizations in Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, and Argentina.
